I was going through the bani of Guru Granth Sahib Ji and there was one part that interested me and I decided to share it with all. Guruji wrote a few questions that he know in the future people like us will ask this questions. Its the questions that we ask everytime. Guru Arjan Dev ji gave simple and beautiful answer for them. Its on Page 131 of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. ( Blue = Shabad, Red = Meaning)
THE QUESTIONS
maajh mehlaa 5.
Maajh, Fifth Mehl:
ka-un so muktaa ka-un so jugtaa.
Who is liberated, and who is united?
ka-un so gi-aanee ka-un so baktaa.
Who is a spiritual teacher, and who is a preacher?
ka-un so girhee ka-un udaasee ka-un so keemat paa-ay jee-o. 1
Who is a house-holder, and who is a renunciate? Who can estimate the Lord's Value? 1
kin biDh baaDhaa kin biDh chhootaa.
How is one bound, and how is one freed of his bonds?
kin biDh aavan jaavan tootaa.
How can one escape from the cycle of coming and going in reincarnation?
ka-un karam ka-un nihkarmaa ka-un so kahai kahaa-ay jee-o. 2
Who is subject to karma, and who is beyond karma? Who chants the Name, and inspires others to chant it? 2
ka-un so sukhee-aa ka-un so dukhee-aa.
Who is happy, and who is sad?
ka-un so sanmukh ka-un vaymukhee-aa.
Who, as sunmukh, turns toward the Guru, and who, as vaymukh, turns away from the Guru?
kin biDh milee-ai kin biDh bichhurai ih biDh ka-un pargataa-ay jee-o. 3
How can one meet the Lord? How is one separated from Him? Who can reveal the way to me? 3
ka-un so akhar jit Dhaavat rahtaa.
What is that Word, by which the wandering mind can be restrained?
ka-un updays jit dukh sukh sam sahtaa.
What are those teachings, by which we may endure pain and pleasure alike?
ka-un so chaal jit paarbarahm Dhi-aa-ay kin biDh keertan gaa-ay jee-o. 4
What is that lifestyle, by which we may come to meditate on the Supreme Lord? How may we sing the Kirtan of His Praises? 4
THE ANSWERS
gurmukh muktaa gurmukh jugtaa.
The Gurmukh is liberated, and the Gurmukh is linked.
gurmukh gi-aanee gurmukh baktaa.
The Gurmukh is the spiritual teacher, and the Gurmukh is the preacher.
Dhan girhee udaasee gurmukh gurmukh keemat paa-ay jee-o. 5
Blessed is the Gurmukh, the householder and the renunciate. The Gurmukh knows the Lord's Value. 5
ha-umai baaDhaa gurmukh chhootaa.
Egotism is bondage; as Gurmukh, one is emancipated.
gurmukh aavan jaavan tootaa.
The Gurmukh escapes the cycle of coming and going in reincarnation.
gurmukh karam gurmukh nihkarmaa gurmukh karay so subhaa-ay jee-o. 6
The Gurmukh performs actions of good karma, and the Gurmukh is beyond karma. Whatever the Gurmukh does, is done in good faith. 6
gurmukh sukhee-aa manmukh dukhee-aa.
The Gurmukh is happy, while the self-willed manmukh is sad.
gurmukh sanmukh manmukh vaymukhee-aa.
The Gurmukh turns toward the Guru, and the self-willed manmukh turns away from the Guru.
gurmukh milee-ai manmukh vichhurai gurmukh biDh pargataa-ay jee-o. 7
The Gurmukh is united with the Lord, while the manmukh is separated from Him. The Gurmukh reveals the way. 7
gurmukh akhar jit Dhaavat rahtaa.
The Guru's Instruction is the Word, by which the wandering mind is restrained.
gurmukh updays dukh sukh sam sahtaa.
Through the Guru's Teachings, we can endure pain and pleasure alike.
gurmukh chaal jit paarbarahm Dhi-aa-ay gurmukh keertan gaa-ay jee-o. 8
To live as Gurmukh is the lifestyle by which we come to meditate on the Supreme Lord. The Gurmukh sings the Kirtan of His Praises. 8
saglee banat banaa-ee aapay.
The Lord Himself created the entire creation.
aapay karay karaa-ay thaapay.
He Himself acts, and causes others to act. He Himself establishes.
ikas tay ho-i-o anantaa naanak aykas maahi samaa-ay jee-o. 9236
From oneness, He has brought forth the countless multitudes. O Nanak, they shall merge into the One once again. 9236
Some of you may be wondering who is Gurmukh? is that a persons name? is that a characteristic?
No, Gurmukh literally means To face the Guru. The word in Punjabi means to follow the "ways of the Guru" and not to follow your animal instincts and basic desires of the mind. The opposite of Gurmukh is Manmukh, which means a person who follows his own uncontrolled mind or wild desires.

Thank you for sharing this inspiring shabad . When pondered upon deeply,I find that this particular shabad to be the very question that every youth has in the early stages of his/her life. If one turns to the Guru for the answers to every question,then I gurantee that there will be perfect answers as demonstrated by this Shabad.Unfortunately, many of us turn to other paths and people in order to answer these questions in life. Looking at the Guru Granth Sahib, if one truly explores the bani within it, they will find that it not only answers the burning questions of the union of god with man. The Guru also shares a distinctive style of living as well as secrets of the universe that still unfathomable to the human mind. The Guru also teaches and guides anyone who turns to the Guru. Thus I encourage all Sikhs to at minimum read the translations of the Guru Granth Sahib.
